Social, Cultural and Historical context

A social context is when you have been influenced or affected by events happening in society, such as: family births, family deaths, moving school

A historical context is being influenced or affected by something that has happened in the past such as: A new president, a world war, a terrorist attack

A cultural context is being influenced or affected by music, clothing, religion, films, etc

Explain how contexts influence television programmes. Refer to Cuffs (10 marks)

In modern society racism is still an obsticle amongst the world and media platforms such as film, tv and social media. 'Cuffs' is an example of how different ethnicities are accepted and are not considered an issue. Ryan is one of the main police officers who is an African descent and is treated no different to other characters who may be of a different ethnicity to him. Ryan is represented as a strong, powerful individual counteracting the typical stereotype of African people as problematic and troublesome which results in their mistreatment by others. 'Cuffs' challenges this stereotype and demonstrates to the pre-watershed audience that regardless of an individuals race or ethnicity the stereotypical judgement may not always be valid and people should approach others with an open mind.

  1. A great blog post, with clear reference to contexts.

Your 10 mark response is brilliantly structured and explained. Good work Darcie!

    ---------------------------------------
A very strong response to the exam question.

    9/10 Band 1

You have used a clear structure within your response and referred back to the question.

Your response clearly refers to the top band of the marking criteria - you have provided a detailed description of one context with a sophisticated explanation of how it influences programmes with reference to 'Cuffs'.

To expand this further (to get 10 marks), directly refer to a moment within 'Cuffs'.

    Well done!
